CountryMark names new vice president of strategy

Apr 05 2016

CountryMark recently named Brian Pope as the new vice president of strategy, focusing on leading strategic business planning efforts for the company.

In his new role, Pope will work with the executive leadership team to align the strategic business plan for success based on a comprehensive understanding of CountryMark’s strategy, goals and objectives. He is tasked with evaluating and managing new strategic business opportunities and initiatives.

“The vice president of strategy position is one of great responsibility and I’m humbled to be chosen to lead CountryMark in that capacity,” said Pope. “I’m looking forward to helping identify opportunities that will allow us to take advantage of the tailwinds of our integrated business, while also positioning the company for minimal exposure to the headwinds that might face us.”

While new to this position, Pope is not unfamiliar to CountryMark. Previously, he served as the director of geology and asset management for CountryMark Energy Resources directing all aspects of drilling, completion and management of the company’s upstream capital program.

Pope holds a bachelor of science in applied physics from Purdue University, a master of science in geophysics from Saint Louis University and is a graduate of the Hoosier Fellows program at Indiana University’s Tobias Center for Leadership Excellence. He has worked in the upstream side of the oil industry since 2006. Brian served as staff geologist, drilling & completion director and vice president of Newburgh, IN-based Trey Exploration, Inc. before joining CountryMark Energy Resources, LLC in July of 2011.

With Pope taking on new responsibilities leading CountryMark’s strategic planning, Matt Smorch, who previously served as vice president of supply and strategy will now become vice president of supply and optimization for Countrymark Refining and Logistics. In this position, Smorch will provide executive oversight for stewarding optimization of both feedstocks and process operations, two areas of the business that are increasing in importance.
